Concordia Concert and Lecture
are all about Strings

The final concert of the Concordia Chamber Players 2009-2010 season will be presented at Trinity Church Solebury on April 11 at 3:00pm.  In this concert you will experience the splendor of strings in the “Strung out on Romance” program. The first work to be heard will be the G major Sextet for two violins, two violas and 2 cellos by Johannes Brahms.  Upon completion of this work Brahms wrote in a letter to a good friend “I have emancipated myself from my last love.”  In fact Brahms included the name of his true love Agathe von Siebold in the first  movement using the letters of her first name as the notes of the melody AGADHE. Keep in mind that H in German notation is really B. Agathe broke off her relationship with Brahms when he refused to get married.

The second work is the Sextet in A Major, also for two violins, two violas and 2 cellos, by Antonin Dvorak.  The Czech composer wrote this glorious work during the most prolific time in his career. He had just been awarded enough funding to be able to compose to his heart’s content. You will the most beautiful melodies as Dvorak is known for as well as his Slavonic Dance style of writing.

To compliment your immersion in the glorious sound of strings you are invited to join us on Friday, April 9 from for an evening of discussion with world renown bowmaker – and instrument dealer, Yung Chin from New York. Be prepared to ask all the questions you’ve ever had about the secrets of Italian varnish, what types of wood are used, what makes the sound so different, and why do these instruments cost what they do?  The cost of tickets for the evening are $50 and include Hors d’oeuvres and a full bar. The evening will  begin at 6:00 PM at the beautiful Gen Oaks Farm at 6871 Upper York Road in Solebury.

The artists for Sunday’s concert will be Catherine Cho and Yoon Kwon on violin, Robert Rinehart and Mark Holloway on viola and James Wilson and Michelle Djokic on cello. Tickets are $25 and as always, children 16 and under accompanied by an adult are free. Concerts take place at Trinity Church, 6587 Upper York Road in Solebury.
